The Mini Plush Lop
The Mini Plush Lop is a rare and increasingly popular rabbit breed known for its incredibly soft, velvety coat and gentle, affectionate temperament. Developed from Holland Lops, Mini Rex, and Mini Lops, this small breed typically reaches 3–4.5 pounds and features dense, low-shedding fur and classic lop ears. Mini Plush Lops are calm, people-oriented, and often enjoy being handled, making them wonderful companions for families and indoor homes. Their care is simple, requiring a hay-based diet, spacious housing, and minimal grooming due to their rex-like coat. Though not yet ARBA-recognized, their sweet nature and luxurious fur make them highly sought-after pets.
The Mini Plush Lop Vs. The Holland Lop
Mini Plush Lops and Holland Lops may share some lineage, but they are distinct in several key ways. Mini Plush Lops are bred from Holland Lops, Mini Rex, and sometimes other carefully selected lines to create a rabbit with a uniquely soft, velvety “plush” coat and a slightly more refined, compact body. Their fur is shorter, denser, and much more uniform than a Holland Lop’s traditional rollback coat. Holland Lops, on the other hand, are known for their stocky build, wide heads, and classic lop look with a more textured coat. While both are small, friendly companion breeds, Mini Plush Lops often shed less, have a more hypoallergenic feel, and offer a smoother, low-maintenance grooming experience compared to the fluffier Holland Lop.
Show
Mini Plush Lops are an adorable hybrid of Holland Lops and Mini Lops, bred for their sweet temperament and compact size. While they make wonderful pets, it’s important to note that they are not currently recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA), which means they cannot compete in official breed classes at ARBA-sanctioned shows. However, they may be eligible for local or open “pet-friendly” classes where non-recognized rabbits can be shown for personality and appearance. Mini Plush Lops are perfect for families looking for a friendly, cuddly companion, even if they aren’t intended for competitive showing.
